A community-level motivation to achieve environmental goals at the grassroots is vital in addressing local and global targets to check environmental degradation and processes of global warming, said environmentalist Salam Rajesh.

Speaking to locals of Tejpur Laimanai in Kakching district on Thursday, Rajesh briefly outlined the connection of deforestation and wildlife exploitation to health issues such as the current Covid-19 pandemic.

He interacted with the women community as part of an ongoing environmental awareness campaign launched by OKHO (Okeshwar Honeshwar) Trust, Langmeidong.

“There is need for local communities to understand the negative fallouts when humans disrespect nature and indulge in practices that are detrimental to the health of forest and wetland ecosystems, he said adding that random deposit of domestic and commercial wastes in open spaces and water bodies greatly harm the natural environment.

Manipur Voluntary Health Association secretary L.Suranjoy Singh while interacting on the relationship shared by humans with their natural surroundings, stressed on the need for local communities to proactively involve in protecting their surroundings from unwanted defiling by discarding wastes randomly and destroying wooded areas unnecessarily. There is need for the community to realize that health issues generate from polluting water bodies and depletion of wooded areas, he said.

The environmental awareness program was attended by Up-Pradhan of Mayeng Lamjao Gram Panchayat, Y.Rameshwar Singh, Nupi Lup Laimanai organizer Heikrujam Sumati Devi and national awardee Ngouba Thouna as presidium member. Legal Aid Clinic, Hiyanglam and Manipur Voluntary Health Association co-organized the program with OKHO Trust.
