Minister for Forest, Environment and Climate Change Awangbow Newmai has opined that Project Tiger should be extended to Tamenglong Forest Division.

The minister made the remark as a chief guest during the observance of the International Tiger Day 2021 at Tamenglong HQ on Thursday.

Project Tiger aims at ensuring a viable population of Bengal tigers in their natural habitats, protecting them from extinction, and preserving areas of biological importance as a natural heritage forever representing as close as possible the diversity of ecosystems across the distribution of tigers in the country.

Awangbow Newmai said that tigers are one of the most important carnivorous animals in the food chain and an utmost important component of the ecosystem. Tamenglong certainly has a tiger habitat as several tigers were found killed in different seasons, he added.

The minister and other speakers opined about the vast potential of forest and wildlife found in the district. Honorary wildlife warden Nehemiah Panmei appealed for creating a new wildlife division office solely for Tamenglong District. DFO Tamenglong Kh Hitler Singh appealed to strengthen the staff strength of Tamenglong Forest Division especially for Tamei Range which is understaffed.

The programme was jointly organised by Tamenglong Forest Division, Rainforest club Tamenglong and Corbett Foundation. Tamenglong ADC chairman Namsinrei Panmei, Rainforest Club Tamenglong, Corbett Foundation and village authority members also attended the programme.

The international Tiger Day is observed by the tiger countries since 2011 as per the resolution of tiger countries to double the number of wild tigers during a submit held at Saint Petersburg, Russia.

It may be mentioned that a suspected tiger mauled a herd of cows at Kuilong Part II under Tamei Subdivision, Tamenglong district. Investigation into the case are going on by setting up camera traps.
