Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur has sought the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the alarming COVID-19 situation in Myanmar by providing emergency relief materials including medicines and oxygen cylinders as a humanitarian aid.

In a representation to the PM on Friday, AIMS highlighted the massive increase in cases and deaths due to COVID-19 in the neighbouring country.

The number of COVID cases has exploded in Myanmar and the country is battling an acute shortage of medical oxygen as COVID-19 has spread rapidly, it said.

Further, AIMS said that the health system is on the verge of collapse due to strikes by doctors and nurses who have joined a nationwide civil disobedience campaign against the military that seized power.

“People have defied lockdowns in Myanmar in order to purchase oxygen. It leaves countless people desperately scrambling to obtain oxygen supplies for sick family members and forcing thousands to queue for hours. Patients are dying for no reason due to shortness of oxygen of breath”.

AIMS also mentioned that the ethnic communities from North East India who are settled in the neighbouring country, Myanmar are begging for support to combat a massive spike in daily COVID-19 cases of the oxygen supply.

AIMS also lauded PM Modi and stated that “national COVID-19 (situation) is stabilising at a faster rate”.
