World Bamboo Day observed at Mapao Zingtun

The World Bamboo Day at Mapao Zingtun was focused on the promotion and plantation of bamboos in Manipur

World Bamboo Day was on Saturday observed at Sorshia Christian College, Mapao Zingtun, Kangpokpi District, Manipur.

The chief guest of the programme was Prof Amar Yumnam, Former Vice-Chancellor, Manipur University. The guests of honour were Homen Thangjam, Faculty, IGNTU, Regional Campus Manipur and Mayanglambam Khelendro Singh, President, the Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur, said a press note issued by AIMS.

The programme was presided by Hoping Raman, Mapao Zingtun. The chief guest Prof Amar Yumnam said, “bamboo is a great way to reduce carbon footprint and help fight global warming. Bamboo is a viable replacement for wood. It also plays a very important role in the socio-economic lives of the people of Manipur as they depend on it for earning their livelihood.”

Manipur is one of India’s largest bamboo producing states. However, the bamboo population is declining day by day. Therefore, the programme was focused on the promotion and plantation of bamboo in Manipur, said AIMS.

Homen Thangjam pointed out that “bamboo is inextricable to the tradition of Manipur”. Mayanglambam Khelendro Singh, President, The Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur stressed on how AIMS contributes to the development of bamboo in Manipur. The programme was concluded with the planation of bamboo at the campus of Sorshia Christian College.
