Temporary sanitation workers under ADC Ukhrul Small Town Committee consisting of three dipper drivers and 37 sanitation workers are responsible for maintaining and keeping the Ukhrul Town clean.

Due to non-payment of their salary since November 2020, the temporary sanitation workers under ADC Ukhrul Small Town Committee have decided to stop collection and disposing of garbage from Thursday onwards, unless the concerned authority pays their pending salary for six months.

Interacting with this correspondent, one sanitation worker, who does not want to be identified, informed that “rain or shine, we have been working without rest. We cannot go for other works to meet our expenses. We are facing hardship due to non-payment of our meagre salary of Rs 5,000 per month for the past six months. We have decided to stop collection and disposing of garbage until we get our salary.”

It is learnt that there are 11 permanent sanitation workers under ADC Small Town Committee. “The permanent sanitation workers are regularly drawing their salary whereas temporary sanitation workers are without salary since November 2020”, lamented one temporary sanitation worker.

The sanitation workers complained that they were not issued rain boots and raincoats last year and they are yet to get their issue for this year too.

There are four dipper trucks out of which two trucks are broken and yet to be repaired. There is fear and apprehension among the temporary sanitation workers that they might be terminated from employment for their decision taken on Thursday.
