May 24 incident settled as per Tangkhul Customary Law

As per Tangkhul Customary Law “Shanao Pangkat Sa” a four legged animal was arranged as a sign of the settlement. According to Tangkhul Customary Law, anyone who assault a married women is allowed to perform “pareizai”. Since, the victims of the May 24 incident are unmarried young girls, “shanao pangkat sa” was performed as a sign that the issue over the incident has been solved amicably once and for all and for good.

Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) and Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) on Saturday came together and reached a “compromise” over the May 24 incident as per Tangkhul Customary Law at Wunghon Village.

On May 24, 2023, four Tangkhul girls were physically assaulted at Kwakeithel Bazaar, near the Asian Hospital, Imphal. The women were on their way to Imphal Airport and they were physically assaulted by an unruly mob at Kwakeithel Bazaar near Asian Hospital, Imphal at around 11:30am.

After meeting for the second time, the TNL and COCOMI finally signed a “compromise deed” on Saturday at Wunghon Village, in the presence of victims’ family members and leaders from both the communities.

The “compromise deed” stated that “In regards to physical meted out to four Tangkhul girls by unruly mob at Kwakeithel Bazaar, Imphal on 24 May 2023, the Tangkhul Naga Long and Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity in the presence of victims’ family members, the unfortunate incident has been compromised as per Tangkhul Customary Law.

“The COCOMI on behalf of the mob had prepared the necessary customary requirement as per the direction and request of the Tangkhul Naga Long. Hence, the matter has been solved once and for all for peaceful coexistence.”

The “compromise deed” was jointly signed by President of TNL, David K Shimray, Media Coordinator of COCOMI, Somorendro TH, Chairman of Wunghon Village, Turner Raihing, Chairman of TNALP (South), Somi Angkang, Chairman of Ato Longphang (North), Dearson Chamroy and Ngaraipam R Shimray, father of one of the victims.
