JAC Medical Fraternity, Churachandpur suspends agitation after Joint Adhyaksh of ZP agrees to pay compensation

The Joint Adhyaksh of Zilla Parishad, Manipur in the joint meeting admitted “the unfortunate and avoidable mistake” committed by volunteers during the 48 hours PRIs general strike.

JAC Medical Fraternity, Churachandpur agreed to suspend the ongoing agitation in connection with physical assault of one female medical staff on duty and damage of a vehicle in which she was travelling in connection with the 48 hrs general strike called by zilla parishad/ PRI at Phoujakchao ikhai on April 22, 2021, in public interest.

The Joint Adhyaksh of Zilla Parishad, Manipur, representing Bishnupur, Imphal East and Imphal West, has also agreed to pay a solatium of Rs 1,75,000 to the victim for her medical expenses and repairing of her damaged vehicle.

A meeting was held at the Conference Hall, District Hospital, Churachandpur on Friday from 9 pm till midnight. An agreement was signed by — Mutum Birachandra Singh, zilla parishad member, 7-Ngangkhalawai, representing Joint Adhyaksh of Zilla Parishad, Manipur; Dr James K Touthang Secretary JAC Churachandpur, representing JAC Medical Fraternity, Churachandpur; Thangboi Gangte, Addl deputy commissioner, Churachandpur, representing District Administration, Churachandpur; Dr Vumchinpau Tonsing, chief medical officer, Churachandpur, representing Health Department, Churachandpur.

It was also agreed that such incidents should not be repeated in future and no official on duty should be targeted or harassed in any manner.

The Joint Adhyaksh of Zilla Parishad in the meeting admitted “the unfortunate and avoidable mistake” committed by its volunteers and agreed for reconciliation in order to pacify the victim and call off the ongoing agitation by the medical fraternity of Churachandpur District.

The JAC Medical Fraternity, Churachandpur, in the spirit of brotherhood and forgiveness, accepted the unconditional apology tendered by the Joint Adhyaksh of Zilla Parishad in the interest of the general public.

The incident occurred on April 22 during the 48 hours general strike (April 21 and April 22) called by Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) of six districts in protest against non-release of MGNREGA funds. Rosy Themboi, a nurse posted at Leisang Health and Wellness Centre in Churachandpur district, was on her way to Saikot Primary Health Centre where she was assigned COVID-19 vaccination duty. She was travelling in her private car driven by her brother, Lalboi Khongsai.
