Tangkhul medicos’ first conference-cum-free surgical camp begins in Ukhrul

The conference aimed to get to know Tangkhul medical brethren working across India, to exchange views, ideas and encouragement to excel in academics and healthcare activities. Also to keep abreast of current trends in medical sciences and all informed and updated.

Under the theme “Looking Beyond With ATMA”, the first All Tangkhul Medico’s Association (ATMA) Conference cum Free Surgical Camp kickstarted on Saturday at Comprehensive Health Services and Research Centre (CHSRC), Ukhrul.

Retired Joint Director Medical Directorate, Government of Manipur, Dr. M. Angamla attended the programme as Chief Guest. Executive Director of CHSRC, Dr. Nelson Vashum and CMO of Ukhrul, Dr. Kapangring A Shimray were the guests of honour.

As many as 100 Tangkhul doctors from different parts of India are attending the ongoing Conference. One of the significant parts was the acknowledgement and conferring of Lifetime Achievement Award to Retired Professor, Dr. Hoping Vashum for his contribution and medical care for Tangkhul community and state at large. Dr. Hoping Vashum is the first Tangkhul surgeon. He did his MBBS from Guwahati Medical College between 1962-64. 

ATMA president Dr. Wormi Sharon informed that “a total of 20 major surgeries will be conducted in the free surgical camp. The ATMA has identified the patients, who cannot afford to go to hospital due to their livelihood conditions. Major surgeries like cholecystectomy, hernia, appendicitis, hysterectomy and myomectomy will be carried out. 

“The Conference aimed to get to know Tangkhul medical brethren working across all parts of India, to exchange views, ideas and encouragement to excel in academics and healthcare activities. Also to keep abreast of current trends in medical sciences and all informed and updated.”

Live surgical demonstration of Laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed on Saturday. And for the first time in Ukhrul and only next to Shija Hospital, ATMA successfully performed a keyhole surgery on Saturday at CHSRC. 

On Sunday, a live surgical demonstration on “Modified Reverse Caesarean Section” a procedure developed by Dr. Nelson Vashum will be conducted. The procedure has been put forward to ICMR for approval. 

ATMA expressed gratitude to Karl Storz for providing the Laparoscopic equipment and technician to conduct free surgery at Ukhrul. ATMA also expressed gratitude to pharmaceutical companies like Abbott, Anems Life Sciences, Zuventus, Gallberry and others for their support and collaboration. 

The ongoing camp conducted by ATMA is recognised by Manipur Medical Council. ATMA has taken up various health related activities in different places including far flung and remote areas of Ukhrul and Kamjong Districts.

There are 111 doctors from the Tangkhul community and 100 of them took part in the ongoing Conference. Traditional bags were presented to all the delegates and a longpi pottery tray as souvenir for speakers and resource persons. The conference will wind up on November Sunday.
