Federation of Haomee (FoH) on Wednesday demanded the resignation of minister Letpao Haokip and minister Awangbou Newmai if the two ministers failed to retract the agreement signed between the two ministers and representatives of Committee on Protection of Mt Koubru (COPPK) by May 20.

On April 20, 2021, a four-point agreement was “secretly” signed at the Lamphel quarter of minister Letpao Haokip regarding the controversy surrounding Mt Koubru, FoH said in a release on Wednesday.

FoH asserted that the ministers had no right to sign such an agreement without the consent of the people, particularly the “owner of the land” — the indigenous people.

The federation also lashed out at the forest minister, questioning his silence when there was mass deforestation of reserve forest to facilitate poppy plantations, settlements in the reserve forest areas, killing of forest animals, etc. What kind of forest minister is he, FoH asked.

Stating that the ecological condition of Mt Koubru has degraded over the years, FoH accused COPPK of remaining silent on the matter and asserted that COPPK should not speak on the matter. FoH also exuded confidence that the state government will take actions considering the sentiments of the people of the state.

FoH further said that Mt Koubru is an inextricable part of the indigenous people of the state. Stating that it is the duty of everyone to safeguard and preserve the sacred place, the federation said that no one should try to meddle in it.
