Olish, Biren win by record margins; Deputy CM, MPCC chief bite the dust

BJP candidate SS Olish has defeated her lone rival Naga Peoples Front’s candidate Langhu Paulhring Anal with a margin of 27,341 votes. CM Biren defeated his rival Indian National Congress’ candidate Pangeijam Saratchandra Singh with a margin of 18,271.

As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is all set to return to power in Manipur, the party’s woman candidate for Chandel has won by a record margin. BJP candidate SS Olish has defeated her lone rival Naga Peoples Front’s candidate Langhu Paulhring Anal with a margin of 27,341 votes.

This is the largest victory margin in the 12 Manipur Legislative Assembly elections. Olish got 37,066 votes, while Langhu Paulhring Anal bagged 9,725 votes.

Olish secured 79.06 % of the votes polled whereas Langhu Paulhring Anal received 20.74%.

She even exceeded chief minister N Biren Singh’s victory margin. CM Biren Singh registered the second highest victory margin in the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly Election. He defeated his lone rival Indian National Congress’ candidate Pangeijam Saratchandra Singh with a margin of 18,271.

With 24,814 votes, CM Biren got 78.54 % of the votes polled while Saratchandra received 20.71% at 6,543 votes.

Deputy chief minister and National People’s Party candidate Yumnam Joykumar Singh and Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee president Nameirakpam Loken Singh are among political heavyweights who bit the dust in the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly Elections, Results of which was declared on Thursday.

Yumnam Joykumar was defeated by Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Khwairakpam Raghumani Singh by a margin of 909 votes in Uripok assembly constituency. Raghumani obtained 8,335 votes and got hold of 36.17% of votes polled while Joykumar secured 32.23% of total votes polled and received 7,426 votes.

Congress’ State president Nameirakpam Loken Singh lost to BJP’s candidate Thounaojam Basanta Singh by 3,060 votes in Nambol Assembly constituency. Thounaojam Basanta Singh, who is the son of former union minister Thounaojam Chaoba Singh, got 16,885 votes while Loken obtained 13,825 votes in the straight contest.

Among the sitting ministers, Minister for Agriculture, Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Oinam Lukhoi Singh failed to retain his seat in Wangoi Assembly seat. He suffered defeat in hands of National People’s Party candidate Khuraijam Loken Singh with a margin of 3,266 votes. Loken got 15,330 while Lokhoi secured 11,828 votes in the straight fight after Congress candidate Salam Joy Singh extended support to Lukhoi hours before the election.
