Manipur Gorkhas hold mega bike rally in support of War on Drugs

Hundreds of Gorkhas across the state enthusiastically participated in a bike cum light motor vehicle rally organized in support of the Government’s initiative ‘War on Drugs 2.0’ campaign today in Kangpokpi district.
The rally was organized under the theme, “Stop Poppy Plantation, Save Forests, Save Manipur” by Manipur Gorkha Joint Co-Ordination Committee in collaboration with the state-level Gorkha civil bodies, village-level clubs, women’s society, and authority boards to give a strong and powerful message to eradicate the menacing poppy cultivation.
The Manipur Gorkha Joint Co-Ordination Committee is formed by Manipur Gorkha Welfare Union, All Manipur Gorkha Students’ Union, NeSahityaitiya Parishad Manipur, Bharatiya Gorkha Parishang Manipur Branch and All Manipur Gorkha Ex-Servicemen Association.
Minister for Social Welfare, Skill, Labour, Employment and Entrepreneurship, and Fisheries, Heikham Dingo formally flagged off the Gorkha’s mega Bike and Light Motor Vehicle Rally at Kanglatongbi this morning at 8:00 am.
The minister flagged off the rally in the presence of Meena Bista, Pradhan Kangatongbi, Hari Prasad Nepal, and LB. Adhikari, Convenor and Co-Convenor of the Manipur Gorkha Joint Co-Ordination Committee apart from more than 300 Light Motor Vehicle including bike rally participants.
Minister Heikham Dingo said that the initiative of the Gorkha people in organizing the mega rally is appreciated as it will definitely spread a strong message to the people towards the success of the Government’s War on Drugs.
He also said that when the people of Manipur irrespective of communities come together and fight collectively the issues of poppy and other drugs issues will be eradicated in the state.
The rally then approached towards Saraswati Junior High School at Parsain village where an awareness seminar was held before it reached Upper Kalapahar for lunch and another awareness seminar.
At Upper Kalapahar, Addl. SP (Ops) Kangpokpi, Tholu Rocky, MPS also attended the awareness seminar and flagged off the rally from Upper Kalapahar which headed towards I.T.Road (Twilang) area via the National Highway -2 connection Imphal-Tamenglong road at Kangpokpi town.
Speaking to the media, the President of the All Manipur Gorkha Students’ Union, L.B. Adhikari, who is also the Co-Convenor of the Manipur Gorkha Joint Co-Ordination Committee said that the rally cum awareness program has been organized to show our full support towards Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s initiative “War on Drugs” as the Gorkha people in the state considered that being responsible citizens of the state our primary responsibility is to support our Chief Minister for such a worthy initiative.
He continued that the rally was organized under the theme, ” Stop Poppy Cultivation, Save Forests, and Save Manipur” while adding that we would like to spread a strong and powerful message to the people of Manipur through the rally to stop once and for all and let’s save our beautiful state.
He also said that we want to appeal particularly to the Gorkha people of Manipur never to indulge in poppy cultivation or work as a laborer in poppy plantations, and never get involved in poppy and any other illegal drugs business.
It [the bike, and LMV rally] was never organized with any other intention or to hurt the sentiments of any communities but it was organized purely in support of the CM’s initiative on the ‘War against Drugs’ and with an intention to give awareness and strong message to the people of Manipur to eradicate the menacing poppy cultivation” Adhikari added.
The rally was seen widely welcomed by the people from Kanglatongbi in Imphal West, and Charhajare, Motbung, Koubru Leikha, Prasain, Toribari, Maohing Nepali, Harup Khopi, Gorkha Tapon, Panikheti, Irang Pt-I, and Poudel Basti in Kangpokpi district.
The organizing committee of the rally extended its heartfelt gratitude to Kuki Inpi Kangpokpi district, KSO Sadar Hills, TSA Sadar Hills, Liangmei Naga Council Eastern Zone, All Liangmai Naga Students Union Manipur apart from the DC Kangpokpi, SP Kangpokpi, Addl. SP, UPI, SP Imphal West, and OC Sekmai, OC Kangpokpi for their cooperation and support towards the success of the rally.
From Kangpokpi District Headquarters, the rally was divided into two groups. While team A moved toward Tujang Vaichong from Chawangkining via Gorkha Tapon and Naga Tapon along the Inter Village Road connecting Chawangkining and Tujang Vaichong Sub Divisional Headquarters, Team B took the state’s oldest highway I.T. Road till Thonglang village and moved toward Indira Junior High School in Irang Part-I via Inter Village Road connecting Thonglang and Irang Part-I.
Awareness program was also held at Kalapahar, Gorkha Tapon UJB School, Irang Part-II, and Indira Junior High School, Irang Part-I.
Then, both the rally teams from Indira Junior High School in Irang Part-I and moved down towards Kanglatongbi via I.T.Road and later connected with the National Highway at Kangpokpi.
Meanwhile, unknown miscreants reportedly damaged the back windshield of one vehicle at the rally around 100 metres away from Chawangkining using Catapult/slings while the rally teams were moving towards Irang areas.
Kangpokpi police personnel immediately rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation. No human injury was reported in the incident.
