Congress leader and AICC senior observer (Manipur Election) Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday asserted that the BJP is indulging in poll violence because “they are confident of losing the Manipur elections”.

A delegation led by Jairam Ramesh and AICC incharge Manipur Bhakta Charan Das, visited the Chief Election Officer, Manipur regarding the 14 major incidents of poll violence that took place in as many as six assembly constituencies and submitted a representation demanding the election authority to ensure free, fair and peaceful election in the state.  MPCC working president K. Meghachandra and leader P. Saratchandra and MPCC Office Bearers also joined the delegation.

Addressing media persons, Jairam Ramesh expressed his concern saying that the state administration is not doing its best to ensure free and peaceful elections and that is why Congress Party has submitted the memorandum and requested the Chief Electoral Officer to intervene to use his constitutional authority to ensure a free and fair election in the state.

Bhakta Charan Das said that democracy must not be tempered and law and order must be maintained properly in the state. He also said that those who are involved in the poll violence must be booked under law. He asserted that the way BJP has been carrying out vandalism from the beginning, it clearly indicates that they are capable of doing more harm in the future.

Meghachandra said that several poll violence have already occurred in the state ahead of Manipur polls and this needs to stop. He also asserted that those who are involved in the violence must go behind the bars and must not be released unless the elections are over.

The delegation said that they are hopeful that the election authority will ensure free, fair and peaceful election in the state.
