As part of its campaign against illicit substances, a team of the Coalition Against Drugs & Alcohol (CADA) Imphal East District Committee seized distilled indigenous country (DIC) liquor from different parts of Imphal East district on Thursday.
CADA, in a release, stated that around 170 litres of DIC liquor under different labels, including “Kwak Lei”, “Leiyu”, were seized by the team from Singjamei Bhagyabati Leikai and Kongba Keithel.
The liquor was seized from Irom Banta (43), S/o I. Lokeshwor of Singjamei Bhagyabati Leikai, Samjetsabam Purnima (36) W/o S. Pradeep of Andro Uchon, and Athokpam Roshan (46) S/o A. Narahari of Kongba Bazar. The bottled DIC liquor was destroyed at Kongba Thongkhong, according to CADA.
CADA also slammed the Manipur government for not properly implementing the Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act 1991, under which Manipur is a “dry state”, while stating that the mushrooming of alcohol manufacturing units and unchecked sale of alcohol only proves that the state government’s dishonesty in trying to save the youths from the “ocean of alcohol”.
“There’s no reason to point out that the Manipur government only thinks about profit and not the people,” it asserted.
