Awareness programme on POCSO Act held

The main aim of the programme was to sensitize the local residents of Thoubal Ningombam on the issue of rising crime against women and children.

Women Action for Development (WAD) in collaboration with Ningombam Ideal Youth Club organised a one day awareness programme on POCSO Act and other legal mechanisms on Sunday at Thoubal Ningombam, Thoubal District.

The main aim of the programme was to sensitize the local residents of Thoubal Ningombam on the issue of rising crime against women and children. The event also discussed legal mechanisms which are needed to be noted by every single person on the issue, WAD said in a release.

WAD secretary Sobita Mangsatabam stressed on the role of the community in the fight against crimes against women in terms of providing psychosocial support and stigmatisation of the victims.

Further she stressed on the steps on how to approach the nearest police station by any person after coming to know that sexual assault have been committed to a minor girl or a boy under the age of 18 years as per the POCSO Act, 2012. She also drew the attention of the participants to report such cases directly to the DGP if the nearest PS failed to receive the complaint.

Sobita maintained that it is not only the women or girls who are to be sensitized but also “our sons, brothers, fathers etc”. They need to understand the issue, she said. The salient features of POCSO Act was also stressed.

The programme was participated by the local youth, their parents and Meira Paibis of the area. Ningombam Ideal Youth Club vice president Ningombam Arunkumar also took part in the programme.
