Athuan Abonmai Killing: Protests rage on, reason for brutal murder sought

Under the aegis of the Joint Action Committee Against the Brutal Murder of Shri Athuan Abonmai, sit-in protests were staged at Gaipuinam, Namdulong, Ragailong, Kakhulong, Keishamthong, Majorkhul, Pantilong, amongst others.

Protests demanding justice in the abduction and brutal murder of former president and advisor of Zeliangrong Baudi (ANM), Athuan Abonmai continued on Friday as many staged sit-ins and candlelight vigil.

Women Society, Chingmeirong staged a sit-in at Chingmeirong Kabui Khul on Friday. A member of the society, Nganbi Daimei condemned the brutal and merciless killing of Athuan Abonmai, who worked towards uniting the people of the state and envisioned peaceful coexistence. Any organisation or individuals who killed him should explain why he was killed. It is unfortunate that the state government has not been able to nab the culprits involved, she lamented.

Demanding to take befitting action against the security personnel who remained a silent spectator when Athuan Abonmai was kidnapped and district administration, she said , failing to do so, the women’s society will support any form of intense agitations launched by the JAC, she added.

On the other hand, under the aegis of the Joint Action Committee Against the Brutal Murder of Shri Athuan Abonmai, sit-in protests were staged at Gaipuinam, Namdulong, Ragailong, Kakhulong, Keishamthong, Majorkhul, Pantilong, amongst others. The protestors held placards that read — Murder is not an accident, justice for Athuan Abonmai now or never, justice delayed is justice denied, deliver justice at the earliest, no justice no rest, amongst others.

In the evening, the Protection and Preservation Committee Manipur (PPCM) and Lamyanba Irabot Ningshing Thouram Observation Committee (LINTOC) jointly held a candlelight vigil at Wahengleikai Lairembi, Imphal.

Strongly condemning the murder, PPCM convenor Haobijam Bisheshwor maintained that Athuan Abonmai was killed by a gang who wanted to divide the state, since he stood for the unity of the state.

Recalling that former chief minister oiramba Yangmaso Shaiza, SDO Kishan, Token, amongst others were also killed, Haobijam Bisheshwor said that those who killed Athuan Abonmai should remember that the people of the state will always stand beside such precious lives.

Haobijam Bisheshwor further demanded that the state government should bust the designated camps of NSCN (I-M) in Manipur. The state government should punish the culprits, failing which more intense forms of agitations will be launched, he warned.
