Left Coordination Committee, Manipur on Sunday demanded the resignation of chief minister N Biren Singh on moral grounds for his inability to nab the culprits who brutally killed Athuan Abonmai. The committee also criticised CM Biren for his inability to deal with illegal activities of NSCN (I-M) and also for not being able to destroy the camps of the outfit in the state.

A sit-in protest was staged by the committee at Irawat Bhavan, Imphal demanding justice in the brutal murder of Athuan Abonmai.

Communist Party of India (CPI), Manipur State Council spokesperson Rk Amusana said that it was shameful that the state government is more interested in election and warmly receiving BJP central leaders instead of focusing on delivering justice in the case.

Stating that NSCN (I-M) has been involved in killing people of the state who worked towards uniting the state and collecting illegal tax, Rk Amusana asserted that such organisation should be pushed back from the state. There is no need to take permission from the Centre. It is the duty of the state government to save Manipur.

“It was surprising that the state government which boasted of having improved the relationship between hills and valleys is silent on the matter of Athuan Abonmai killing. It is pertinent to question whether there were two governments in the state — one in the hills and one in the valley,” he said.

He also maintained that there are many CSOs in the hills who are against the killing of Athuan Abonmai, but they could not say anything because they fear their fate when someone can be abducted right under the nose of the security forces deployed for a function attended by the chief minister himself. As such CSOs in the valleys need to proactively struggle for the justice of Athuan Abonmai.

The CPI spokesperson said that the BJP often said that India cannot develop without the Northeast. But the Union government or the Home Ministry has not even condoled the death of Athuan Abonmai or condemned NSCN (I-M). Since the peace talks are going on, they are in constant communication. So the fact that the union government has been able to confirm NSCN (I-M) as the culprits proved that BJP cannot be trusted, he said.

The protestors held placards that read — Resign CM on moral ground, save lives and rights of common citizen, save Manipur, justice for Athuan Abonmai, amongst others.
