Buffalo deaths hit border village

Around 12 buffaloes have died since September 30, 2021.

Sudden and unusual deaths of buffaloes were reported from New Tusom village, bordering Indo-Myanmar Pillar No 128 and 129.

Former secretary of New Tusom Village Authority, Agar Horam informed this correspondent that many buffaloes belonged to Standhope Vashum, Matuiching Horam, VS. Peingam, VS. Khathingla, Mayopam, Ngathingkhui Vashum, Peter Horam  Tharmi Shatsang and SHG Federation. Around 12 buffaloes have died since September 30, 2021. 

The unusual death of buffaloes happened at the border area sharing boundary with Kangjan village under Meluri Sub-Division of Phek District, Nagaland. 

It is worth mentioning that sudden death of buffaloes were reported at Kangjan Village, Nagaland in the first week of September 2021. The laboratory test conducted to specify the etiology of the unspecified disease that killed a number of buffaloes recently at Kangjan village, Nagaland has confirmed it to be Haemorrhagic Septicaemia. Report says that “the test was conducted at the ELISA laboratory in Kohima by the Nagaland animal husbandry and veterinary services department. The department has confirmed that the etiology of the disease was a Gram negative, Coccobacilli, Bipolar organism called Pasteurellamultocida. Hence, the disease is confirmed to be Haemorrhagic Septicaemia”

New Tusom villagers have appealed to the concerned department for immediate intervention to save their livestock. There is fear and apprehension that the disease might have spread from Kangjan village which is about 30 km from New Tusom.
