AFSPA has to be removed from Northeast: Conrad Sangma

Conrad Sangma said that NPP has been against the imposition of AFSPA in the Northeastern states. He opined that repealing of the Act would send a strong message to the people of the region and the gesture will be able to “bridge the trust deficit”.

With elections just round the corner in some states of the Northeast, Meghalaya chief minister, and National People’s Party (NPP) leader, who halted in Dimapur on Tuesday night enroute to Guwahati said that the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) has to be removed from the entire Northeast region of India.

The Meghalaya chief minister had a short but brief meeting with the Dimapur based journalists at the residence of NPP Nagaland State unit president, Andrew Ahoto, at Signal Bosti, Dimapur, where he shared his concern on the recent Oting massacre.

Disclosing that he would be flying to Delhi on Wednesday in order to meet the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah to discuss about AFSPA, the Meghalaya chief minister, had also voiced that the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act has no place in a democratic society.

Conrad Sangma said that the NPP has been against the imposition of the AFSPA in the Northeastern states. He opined that repealing of the Act would send a strong message to the people of the region and the gesture will be able to “bridge the trust deficit”.

While urging upon the Nagaland government and the Centre to work together to repeal the Act, Conrad stated that insurgency was an outcome of a lot of “socio-economic problems” for which he called for finding a solution to the issue in a right way.

He made a stopover in Dimapur after returning from Makhel village, Senapati, Manipur. There, he attended the 88th anniversary of the Mao Students Union (MSU).
