Veteran politician and former Nagaland minister, Y Hewoto Awomi, from Dimapur breathed his last at Eden Medical Centre, Dimapur, in the evening of September 28 after a brief illness. He was 62 and is survived by seven children and wife including four sons and three daughters.
Funeral service for late Y Hewoto Awomi will held at on September 29, 11 am. Late Awomi was born on November 28, 1959 at Thahekhu village, Dimapur.
Late Hewoto contested the NLA election in 2003 as the NPF candidate for 2-Dimapur-II constituency where he defeated another veteran politician of the state and Congress candidate, Imtisungit Jamir.
Late Hewoto defected to Congress in 2008 and contested for the Ghaspani-I constituency defeating NPF candidate, late Khekiho Zhimomi.
In 2013 NLA election, late Awomi Contested for the Ghaspani-II constituency as the Congress candidate but was defeated by the sitting MLA, Zaleo Rio.

3. 2003-2004: Minister, CAWD, Labour & Employment, Nagaland.
4. 2004-2005: Parliamentary secretary, Urban Development, Nagaland.
5. 2006-2007: Parliamentary secretary, Vety & Animal Husbandry, Nagaland.
6. 2008-2013: Member of 11th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (INC), Nagaland.
Meanwhile, Tokheho Yepthomi, MP, Lok Sabha, in a tweet stated that he was deeply saddened by the passing of former Nagaland Minister, Y Hewoto Awomi. Terming late Awomi as a dedicated leader who worked to uplift the lives of people, the MP conveyed his deepest condolences to late Awomi’s family members.
MLA and Advisor Power Department, H Tovihoto Ayemi, has also expressed immense sorrow over the untimely demise of Y Hewoto Awomi, former minister, Nagaland.
In a condolence message, Tovihoto described Late Hewoto Awomi as a man with charismatic personality who
treated all people with equality and in the spirit of humanity. Tovihoto said late Hewoto was a man of compassion and integrity who at all times stood upright for the welfare of the people. In his death, the Naga people have a true leader and the loss created by his death will be irreplaceable. He along with his family members conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members and prayed for eternal solace of the departed soul.
