Two convicted in W Laksha murder case after 16 years

The convicts Ningthoujam Kumar Singh (67) and Ningthoujam Yaima Singh (56), both residents of Thanga Karang Chingjeng, Bishnupur were sent to Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa. Sentencing hearing will take place on October 4 to decide the quantum of punishment.

After 16-year long trial, a Bishnupur court on Wednesday held two persons guilty for committing culpable homicide jointly amounting to murder in Wahengbam Laksha Singh murder case. The convicts Ningthoujam Kumar Singh (67) and Ningthoujam Yaima Singh (56), both residents of Thanga Karang Chingjeng, Bishnupur District were sent to Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa. Sentencing hearing will take place on October 4 to decide the quantum of punishment.

While pronouncing the judgement, Bishnupur Sessions Judge W Tonen Meitei said he was of the view that the accused N Kumar caught hold of the victim W. Laksha Singh and N Yaima stabbed him in his neck by using a knife about 12½ inches long having a wooden handle. Thus, they committed culpable homicide amounting to murder jointly, he added.

Declaring both the accused guilty, the judge convicted them under section 302 IPC.

Both the accused/convicts who were present before the court have been taken into the custody of the court for serving sentence. A police team is requisitioned from the Superintendent of Police, Bishnupur and handed over the two accused persons for escorting up to the Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa.

According to police, On 27-06-2006, Wahengbam Mani Singh of Karang Maning Leikai lodged a complaint at Moirang P.S alleging that his son Wahengbam Laksha Singh, 35, was murdered by Kumar and Yaima by chopping on his son’s throat with a knife while watching Lai Haoraoba at Karang Khuman Pokpa Laibung the previous night.

Based on the report, a regular case was registered under sections 302/34 IPC, police said.

The police further said the accused persons were arrested on 01-07-2006 and were remanded into police custody for interrogation. During interrogation, they admitted that they have murdered (L) Laksha (deceased victim) with a knife near Karang Khumanpokpa Laibung

According to police, the accused Yaima Singh stated that when he along with N. Kumar Singh were drinking alcohol in the vendor of one Godadhor near the Laibung, the victim Laksha came and called him out and they started fighting. Thereafter, the victim Laksha ran away towards a shop -cum- hotel of one Oinam Ibungo Singh where he and Kumar caught him (victim) and chopped the neck of the victim with his knife.

The accused N. Kumar Singh stated that he chased after the victim and caught him (victim) to assist Yaima chop the victim’s body (neck) with his knife. The weapon of offence was recovered at the instance of the accused Yaima Singh u/s 27 Evidence Act, police said.
