President of Bharatya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), Manipur Manoharmayum Barish Sharma and his associates who had staged a protest in front of Congress Bhavan, have been booked for alleged attack on the Congress Bhavan, Imphal. An FRI has been registered against them under sections 147, 148, 149, 447, 506, 34 of IPC at City Police Station for alleged rioting, unlawful assembly, criminal trespass, criminal intimidation with common intention. SI Ch Somorjit Singh has been assigned to investigate the case.

The FRI, which also names Robarth Oinam, Suraj Waikhom, Tomthin Moirangcha Bimol Moirangthem, Dexter Gurumayum and other unknown associates, was registered after a complaint was lodged by MPCC general secretary (admin) S Jeeten Singh.

A group of BJYM members led by its president had on Thursday morning staged a protest rally in front of Congress Bhavan on BT Road in Imphal against alleged despairing comments made by Congress Lok Sabha member Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury against newly-elected President Droupadi Murmu. The Congress MP had allegedly referred to the new President as “Rashtrapatni” on a national TV channel.

Condemning the remark, the BJYM members stormed the gate of Congress Bhawan in Imphal West and burnt the effigy of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi. They shouted various slogans against Congress party and Sonia Gandhi.

Meanwhile, Manipur Congress spokesperson Kh Devabrata reportedly said, “Adhir Ranjan Choudhary has already said that the word Rastrapatni used by him was a slip of tongue. It was a genuine mistake on his part but BJP is blowing it out of proportion.”

He said the Manipur Congress “strongly condemns” the burning of the effigy of Sonia Gandhi by BJP workers. “The BJP as the ruling party is indulging in activities of the opposition instead of focussing on running the government. This is very unfortunate”, he added.

Barish said that the protest was carried out against verbal insults made by Congress party leaders against the newly elected President. He vowed the BJYM will work to completely annihilate Congress from Manipur.

“We strongly condemn the disrespect shown to newly elected President Droupadi”, Barish Sharma told reporters.
