As campaigning for the upcoming election heats up in nooks and corners of Manipur, the father of the National People’s Party (NPP) candidate L Sanjoy was injured on Friday night after some unidentified miscreants shot him during a campaign programme at Yairipok Yambem.
According to reports, the incident occurred at around 9:30 pm while the victim, L Shamjai Singh was campaigning near Sanjoy’s home. He sustained injuries in his right shoulder. His condition is said to be stable at the time of reporting.
National People’s Party chief Conrad Sangma visited the victim at Shija Hospitals on Saturday.
Speaking to media persons after the visit, Conrad Sangma accepted that he has never seen such kind of extreme violence in almost every constituency since he started campaigning in 2002 in Manipur. This has to stop, he asserted and maintained that such incidents reflected the frustrations of certain individuals. Not acceptable at all.
“The state election office should take necessary action so that free and fair elections take place,” he said.
Anguished that our candidate, Sh. L. Sanjoy Singh’s father, Sh. Shamjai Singh was shot & injured in a campaign programme at Yairipok Yambem Leikai. These incidents are tarnishing the sacred essence of our democracy. I urge ECI to see into these developments in #Manipur. pic.twitter.com/EHkSy9Mfvq

On the other hand, deputy chief minister Y Joykumar maintained that it was a very unfortunate incident and added that such violence is becoming a habit. People should analyse why such incidents are happening for the first time in Manipur, he added.
He further said that the state police is ineffective as such incidents have occurred in Andro AC in the past couple of months.
Replying to a query, Joykumar said that BJP workers are suspected to be behind the attack on Sanjoy’s father.
“NPP is becoming stronger so such things are happening,” he said while exuding confidence that NPP would win in more than 20 seats.
Apprised the Chief Electoral Officer of Manipur about the attack on our candidate’s father last night & on the series of incidents that took place around Manipur causing great concern for the safety of our candidates & the people. pic.twitter.com/hW5pAV0KbX
