Wildlife awareness programme held at Khanarok

Environmentalist Salam Rajesh stressed upon the participants the need to protect pollinators like bees, bats and other birds so that the chain of cycle in production of crops and fruit bearing trees continue healthily.

A one-day awareness programme on wildlife was held at Khanarok village under Chanam Sandrok Gram Panchayat as part of the 66th Wildlife Week observation across the State. The program held under the oversee of the Divisional Forest Officer, Thoubal, saw active participation of Khanarok villagers on the different aspects of wildlife related issues in Manipur and elsewhere around the world.

Speaking as resource person, environmentalist Salam Rajesh stressed upon the participants the need to protect pollinators like bees, bats and other birds so that the chain of cycle in production of crops and fruit bearing trees continue healthily. The nexus between humans and their natural surroundings is very important to vitalize the local biological diversity that provides food, shelter and medicine, he said.

Local environmentalist T Rameshwor Singh elaborated on the multiple benefits of nature while reminiscensing the abundance of localized biodiversity in the years gone by. Calling upon the locals to work for revitalization of forests and wildlife in the area, Rameshwor appreciated DFO Thoubal and forest department for organizing the event to garner interest in wildlife conservation.

National awardee Ngouba Thouna called upon the locals to take pride in cultivating sense of pride in the indigenous people’s socio-cultural traits and to link this with their surroundings to further the objective of promoting healthy, natural environment and sustainable living.

The programme was attended by Chanam Sandrok G.P. representative Yensenbam Leibakchao as chief guest, with Deputy Range Officer, Thoubal, Md.Aslam Khan and Ngouba Thouna as guests of honour. The event was co-organized by OKHO Trust, Hiyanglam and Legal Aid Clinic, Hiyanglam and Decent Youth Club, Khanarok.
