In his first public appearance after being re-elected as the MLA of 45-Chingai Assembly Constituency, Khashim Vashum appealed to the congregation to preserve the culture, tradition and customary practices of Tangkhul community. “Preserve the culture, tradition and customary practices of Tangkhul community”. Khashim Vashum stated this while unveiling the monolith of 4th Tangkhul Naga Wungnao couple’s retreat on Saturday at Hongmahn Village in the presence of President of TNWL, SA Ramnganing, Chief of Hongmahn Village, Mathankhui Zimik and various Chiefs and Chieftess from Tangkhul villages. VS. Nganingkhui of Hongmahn village donated the monolith.
A rousing welcome was given at the gate of Hongmahn Village by the Chiefs and Chieftess of Tangkhul villages. Clad in traditional attires accompanied with traditional chanting, MLA Khashim Vashum and his wife was accorded a warm welcome. Hokharai- a traditional way of invoking blessing from the Creator was led by Chief of Sorde Village, A. Masanang.
Khashim Vashum in his speech acknowledged the important role played by Chiefs and Cheiftess of Tangkhul community in the past and urged the congregation to continue to do so even in the days to come. He also lauded the Tangkhul Naga Wungnao Long (TNWL) and Tangkhul Awungvą Saklong (TAS) for organising such programme. “I stand here not only as an MLA of 45-Chingai Assembly Constituency but I promised to serve the whole Tangkhul community” stated Khashim Vashum.
MLA Khashim Vashum expressed elation at seeing Tangkhul chiefs along with their chieftess coming together for the retreat. “The value of Wungnao is gradually losing in modern days. “As Nagas continued their struggle for political movement, it’s to be realised that our customs and cultures present our identity which India has recognised” added Khashim Vashum. We can’t afford to play down the values of customs and traditions. He also reminded Chieftess that they share equal responsibilities in strengthening the customary body in each village.
The Tangkhul Chiefs and Cheiftess prayed for the 3 newly elected MLAs from Tangkhul community. The prayer was led by Former President of TNWL, KS. Raihing. The 4th Tangkhul Naga Wungnao couple’s retreat will wind up on March 28, 2022.
