TFM Report

Over last few days, there have been a series of protests launched by Meitei women demanding not only the withdrawal of Suspension of Operation (SoO) by the government of India. They had also been preventing forces sent by the centre from rushing in to areas where exchange or fire and gunshots are reported along the foothill areas of Manipur.

On Wednesday (May24), the truckloads of additional paramilitary and security forces were moving into areas in an apparent move to repel the armed miscreants believed to be Kuki militants at few places at Tronglaobi village, in Bishnupur District, around 48 km south of Imphal.

Convoys of the trucks taking the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and central armed forces personnel were literally prevented from proceeding further along the Tiddim Road. Even those troops that were ready to move into Ningthoukhong town, Bishnupur district, where a mob tried storm into the house of the Public Works Department minister K Govindas Singh is located, were prevented from entering into the town at an area not far from the Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) office in Bishnupur district. While the women activists blocked the convoys, the house of the minister was partially vandalized by an irate mob.

A woman activist who was part of the another women’s team that tried to storm the DC office Bishnupur, whom TFM spoke to said, “We have completely lost trust in the security forces sent by the central government. They have not been able to control the alleged gun-shot firings and burning down of houses by the armed Kuki groups while taking control over the hapless Meitei villagers who are trying all options to defend themselves”.
