Volunteers clean up litters left behind by Shirui Lily Festival 2022 visitors

The volunteers took out a cleanliness drive covering 42km to pick up litters left behind by visitors during Shirui Lily Festival 2022. The festival reveler had haphazardly scattered plastic bottles and food wrappers on the road sides.

Seeing the blatant littering of waste on the road side, a group of like minded people from Ukhrul came together and initiate the cleanliness drive on 8th and 11th June 2022.

On 8 June 2022, about 87 volunteered and collected the waste from the stretch of Finchcorner to Ukhrul, a distance of 20km and diposed them at the waste disposal site maintained by ADC-Ukhrul.

Ngakuimi Awungshi informed that “A crowd funding was taken up in social media for refreshment and transportation, there was a massive response from the Tangkhul community and raised a sum of Rs. 1,50,500.”

Again, on 11 June 2022, a cleanliness drive was taken up from Ukhrul to Phangrei, a stretch of 22km. A total of 120 volunteers participated in the second phase of the cleanliness drive.

“The cleanliness drives could be carried out because of the generous contributions made in kind and money and the volunteers that turned up on huge numbers from all walks of life” informed Khayui Raleng.

The cleanliness drive was initiated by a group of like minded people from Ukhrul on seeing the blatant littering of waste on the road sides. The cleanliness drive was participated by:

3. Langdang Youth
4. Lunghar Youth
5. Shirui Youth and Student’s Union
6. Hao Riders
7. Hills Rooster Sports Academy
8. Meiphung Production House
9. Youth Light
10. Rising Youth
11. Chiko Adventures
12. Well wishers

Around 5 truckloads of waste was collected on the first phase and around 6 truckloads in the second phase amd disposed at the waste disposal site maintained by ADC-Ukhrul. “It had become a routine for the locals to clean and take care of the waste” added Apam Horam one of the volunteer who participated in the cleanliness drive. Orgnaisor of any event must have a efficient plan for waste management.
