The proscribed outfits, Koireng-led United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and Kanglei Yawol Kanba Lup (KYKL) have jointly condoled the deaths of two of their cadres during a January 30 gunfight with the Kuki National Army-Burma (KNA-B) near Indo-Myanmar Border Pillars (BP) 82 and 83.

In a condolence message conveyed via a press release to the media, the two groups stated that the cadres—identified as “Capt Chiromcha (43) alias Robindro” and “Pvt Moirangcha Sushil alias Athouba”—were part of a “combined force” conducting “area domination” duties when allegedly attacked by “KNA-B and Indian troops” at approximately 1:30 PM.

According to the release, the cadres were advancing toward Wokshu village on the Myanmar side when the ambush occurred. The UNLF-KYKL team reportedly retaliated with rocket launchers and lethod bombs, resisting the assault for over half an hour. The statement claimed that “over eight members of the attacking team were killed,” while Capt Chiromcha and Pvt Athouba died on the spot.

The press release detailed that Chiromcha, a resident of Imphal Thana Awang Leikai, joined the UNLF in 2003 after discontinuing his graduation studies. Having completed higher secondary education, he received basic military training under the banned group. He served in the Lamtai Khunou Special Area (LAKSA) by 2010, rose to Staff Sgt (2012–2013), and became a Staff Officer in 2014. Later, he assumed the role of Moreh Special Zone commander, contributing to economic affairs, medical services, and cadre education. In 2012, he joined the Party Central Cadre and was promoted to Captain.

Pvt Athouba (21), a KYKL member from Sugnu Awang Leikai, joined the outfit in February 2024. After basic military training, he participated in Meeyamgi Yawol Naanmee. The release highlighted his “exemplary courage” during his brief service.

Both groups paid rich tribute to the deceased, asserting that their loss was not only a blow to the outfits but also to the broader “revolutionary movements.” They extended condolences to the bereaved families, sharing in their grief.
