Tension in New Checkon area; Security forces conduct combing ops

Most of the residents of New Lambulane within New Checkon area had already been transported to relief camps as the area was hit by ethnic violence on May 4 and 5.

New Checkon area in Imphal East district has been cordoned off by security forces since 10 AM on Monday and intensive combing operations are underway. Tension is running high at the New Checkon market area after its residents alleged that three persons had asked local traders to shut down their shops.

The frightened shopkeepers then ran helter-skelter and told the local residents about the situation. New Checkon area has a mixed population of Meiteis, Kabuis, Pangals and Kukis.

The entrance to Lambulane was barricaded since May 3rd and this is the first time that such incident has occurred in the heart of the Imphal East. The Rapid Action Force, Manipur police, Army and Assam Rifles are being pressed into action in the area to prevent any untoward incident.
