Protesting against the hike in admission fee in colleges under Manipur University, student unions of 12 colleges have locked administration blocks and main gates of colleges to stop the admission process.
In a press meet organized at a united forum of student unions of colleges under the Manipur University at Imphal College in Kwakeithel, Imphal College Students’ Union general secretary Oinam Premdas said when people are suffering many hardships due to covid pandemic, increase of admission fee is huge blow to student community. An additional “fees to be deposited to Government account” has been introduced this year. Though sports fee and cultural fee deposited to Manipur University are lying unutilized, admission fee has been increased this year amid this covid pandemic, he lamented.
Student unions decided to protest after the authorities initiated the admission process without paying any heed to student unions’ demand for roll back of unreasonable hike in admission fee, he said. Stating admission will not be allowed till admission fee is reduced, he added.
Oinam Premdas further said it is a setback that Manipur University has increased the admission fee when other universities reduced it considering the difficulty of covid-hit students. Vowing to continue agitation till fee structure is changed, he said the concerned department should be held responsible for any untoward incident.
The press conference was attended by representatives of student unions of 12 colleges under Manipur University.
