Mother of Shintha Laishram, L (O) Tampakleima on Friday said that her son was picked by the police from his home and flayed the police for arresting him on “false charges”. She demanded the immediate release of her son.

Womenfolk of Sintha’s locality also staged a sit-in at Heirok Part-III Champrathong demanding the immediate release of Sintha.

Narrating the ordeal, Tampakleima said that her son was picked up by police on the pretext for talks about something. But it is unfortunate that the police are saying that he was arrested from another place and booked him under several charges, she added.

Members of Heirok Development Club, of which Shintha is the publicity secretary, also took part in the sit-in.

The protestors held placards that read – “Stop the system of arresting someone arbitrarily,” “Release Shintha immediately without any condition,” “What is the crime of Shintha,” amongst others. Several slogans were also raised by the protestors.

On April 7, as part of its ongoing protests Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) Thoubal District Committee in association with Ningol Club, Heirok jointly organised a sit-in against the inaction of the government over the judgment acquitting Lhukhosei Zou and the Phoudel drug case, at Heirok Part-II.

Laishram Herojit (also known as Shintha) (27), who is the general secretary of CADA Thoubal District Committee, took an important role in organising the sit-in. Although he didn’t take part in the sit-in, he shared photographs of the protest on social media platforms.

The protest went smoothly and concluded without any incidents. But according to Ningol Club president Sofia Khundongbam, the Thoubal SP called her up over the phone and enquired about the sit-in and was allegedly miffed about a particular placard used during the sit-in – “Chief minister should resign”. Afterwards a team of Heirok police along with women police personnel raided her home at Heirok Part II and confiscated the placards.

Later a team of Thoubal Police Commando came to the home of Sintha at Heirok Part-III Champrathong and arrested him.

According to Thoubal police, Shintha was arrested from Wangjing near Canteen Lampak. He has been charged under Section 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Shintha has been accused of being an overground worker of an unlawful organisation. The Chief Judicial Magistrate, Thoubal on Thursday remanded him under police custody for five days.
