Justice for Sanaton Athokpam (JSA) announced an indefinite total shutdown in the Khurai area from Thursday until the truth about the death of Sanaton is found out.

On Wednesday night hundreds of men and women took out a torch rally demanding justice for Sanaton. The rally was jointly organised by JSA in association with local clubs and Meira Paibi groups of Khurai area.

The rally started from the locality of late Sanaton, Khurai Thangjam Leikai and went towards Lamlong Keithel. It proceeded along the Ayangpali road and reached the Porompat crossing. It then took off towards Minuthong through the New Checkon crossing. A large number of police personnel stationed at the Minuthong stopped the protestors. They wanted to cross the bridge but were not allowed. After confronting the police for a while, the protestors returned to the starting point.

The protestors shouted slogans to remove the hostel warden and the RIMS director, amongst others.

Announcing the total shutdown, JSA president Mimi Thangjam stressed that Sanaton was killed by someone or a group of people. She also expressed anger for not lodging an FIR yet and also for not disclosing the autopsy report.

Meanwhile, DM College of Arts Students’ Union (DMCASU) also protested demanding justice for Sanaton at the Dhanamanjuri University campus. Social and Culture secretary of the union, Sh Obed Kharam resented that the government has not been able to find out the truth about the death of Sanaton.

Stating that no FIR has been lodged, the CCTV footage of the hostel has not been revealed and no accused has been interrogated so far, Obed said that the student union does not take it lightly. If justice is not delivered, the student union along with the students of the college will launch an intense agitation.

The students held placards that read “Justice for Sanaton Athokpam,” “Investigate after filing FIR,” “Take action against RIMS authority” amongst others.

An MBBS student of RIMS, Sanaton Athokpam (22) of Khurai Thangjam Leikai was found hanging in his hostel room on March 15. Crying foul play, JSA has been agitating demanding the authority to probe the case. A magistrate enquiry has been constituted to probe the death.
