Police bust coal mafia syndicate in Nagaland

Nagaland police department said that the accused has been involved in the huge coal racket not only in the state of Nagaland but also extended his tentacles to the neighbouring Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

In what could be termed as a mafia syndicate, a scam on coal mining with alleged license issued by Nagaland State government has been busted by the police. The “racket” has been unearthed following the arrest of the alleged kingpin, identified as one Methlow Konyak, a resident of Nagaland’s Mon district.
Informing to this correspondent, a highly placed source from Nagaland police department on Sunday night said that Methlow has been carrying out the huge coal racket not only in the state of Nagaland but also extended his tentacles to the neighbouring states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
According to the source, an MLA from the ruling government of Assam was also reportedly involved in the coal scam. Those behind the racket were evading police arrests for cheating the government to the tune of crores of rupees as taxes.
The source also said that a PIL has also been filed against the syndicate demanding a CBI probe. The police disclosed that “tens of thousands tons” of illegal coal were reportedly loaded in the railway rakes bound for Assam’s Tinsukia, Lakwa and various other railway stations in the northeast region.
It was said that the alleged “coal scammer”,Methlow Konyak, used documents issued by Nagaland state to transport the illegally procured coal from Margharita. As per reports,  coal supply was connected to documents of a person from Tinsukia, Assam.
