All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur on Monday urged the state election office to reschedule the date of polling of the hill assembly constituencies to any other convenient date which does not fall under Sunday.

Manipur is going to poll in two phases — February 27 and March 3. The first phase, February 27 falls on Sunday and 38 assembly constituencies are going to vote, out of which eight are ST reserved assembly constituencies which are predominantly Christians. So the ATSUM said that it was a matter of grave concern for the tribal people and Christian community of the state.

In a release, ATSUM accused the state election office of lacking the susceptibility and the ability to appreciate the spiritual values, beliefs and practices of the Christian community of the state. This apathy towards the religious sentiment of the Christian community is in fact antagonistic, it added.

“The state election commission must try to ensure participation of all eligible citizens to exercise their adult franchise. But, its decision will instead prevent many from participating in the election,” it said.

Sunday is a day that is holy and sacred, the student body said and added that it is a day for rest and worship.
