Condemning the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre for its apathy towards the protests by farmers against the three contentious farm laws, Communist Party of India (CPI) Manipur State Council secretary L Sotinkumar asserted that as long as there is a BJP, there will be oppression of farmers.

Sotinkumar was speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a protest rally against the killing of farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri district, Uttar Pradesh on October 3, when a motorcade of the son of union minister of state for home affairs, Ajay Kumar, allegedly mowed down eight individuals, including farmers and a journalist.

CPI, All Manipur Nupi Marup and Manipur Loumi Lup jointly organised a sit-in at Irawat Bhavan, Imphal. At around 1:30 am, the protestors tried to take out a rally. The protestors shouted slogans against PM Modi and the BJP government. However, a large number of Manipur police personnel foiled the rally after a scuffle broke out between them.

Sotinkumar strongly condemned the arrest of senior leader of CPI D Raja and other Congress workers for protesting against the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

He asserted that ever since the BJP came to power, they have been oppressing the farmers and the poor. Privatisation of the country’s assets and passing bills against the farmers are not signs of a good government, he added.

The protestors held placards that read — stop killing farmers, arrest Ashish Mishra, withdraw three black farm laws, amongst others.
