Accusing the Manipur Government of robbing the rights of students, All Manipur Muslim Students’ Organisation (AMMSO) on Monday asserted that it will not remain silent if the state government do not distribute the amount for the OBC scholarship at the earliest.

According to AMMSO, around Rs 10 crore have been sanctioned by the Union government to the state government for the second phase of 2019 and scholarship of 2020 of around selected 15,000 OBC students. The student body urged the government to transfer the amount to the individual bank account of the students at the earliest.

In a release, AMMSO said that the students applied for the scholarship through the Minorities and Other Backward Classes, Online Scholarship Management System (OSMS). Even though the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, New Delhi has already sanctioned the amount, the Finance Department of the Government of Manipur has been sitting on it. By not transferring the amount to the students, the government is robbing the rights of the students, AMMSO asserted.

According to the student body, the second phase of the OBC scholarship for 2019 — before the COVID-19 pandemic — has not been given yet. And no OBC students have received their scholarship for 2020.

AMMSO demanded the government to make public where the amount has been utilised at the earliest.

Stating that the Union government has already sanctioned the amount in 2020 to the Manipur Government, the AMMSO said that the Finance Department of the state government was asked why the amount was not transferred before March 2021. But the department denied that no amount has been received for the scholarship and it has created more confusion, the student body said.

AMMSO also condemned the “steps” by the government to rob the students of their rights and drew the attention of the student pressure groups of the state. The student body also asserted it will work towards building a united movement on the issue.
