Meira Paibis storm Lilong PS, demand unconditional release of Bimol Meitei

As per police sources, Bimol Meitei, who is the secretary of Yelhoumee Kanba Lup, has been charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and remanded to police custody till December 13

Meira Paibis and volunteers of local clubs of Lilong Arapti Maning Leikai on Thursday stormed the Lilong Police Station demanding unconditional release of Yumkhaibam Bimol Meitei. The protestors shouted slogans insisting that Bimol Meitei is an innocent civilian, who is engaged in blacksmithing looking after his family.

The Lilong Arapti Maning Leikai Women Association organised a sit-in at a community hall of the area on Thursday afternoon. After the sit-in was concluded, the Meira Paibis and volunteers of the local club decided to storm the police station.

The protestors demanded to meet Bimol who has been lodged at Lilong PS. They alleged that Bimol was taken away from the police station at around 10:30-11:00 am earlier.

While protesting, daughter of Bimol Meitei, Y Tampha fainted and had to be taken aside. She later became conscious, but kept on crying inconsolably along with her mother.

Later, three Meira Paibi leaders and a representative of the local club met the officer-in-charge of the police station. The OC assured that Bimol Meitei was safe and sound.

Lilong Arapti Maning Leikai Women Association general secretary Mayengbam Jeenat told media persons that the Meira Paibis of decided to stage the sit-in to register their anguish at the action of the police, who arbitrarily arrest someone and slap some Acts alleging that the arrested person is connected to an unlawful organisation.

“We know who Bimol is. He leads a simple life, earning meager amounts by making knives and looking after his daughters,” she said, while urging the authorities to release Bimol Meitei at the earliest.

Meanwhile, as per police sources, Bimol Meitei, who is the secretary of Yelhoumee Kanba Lup, has been charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and remanded to police custody till December 13.

Sources said that Bimol Meitei was taken away to be produced before the SDPO of Thoubal, and later to an interrogation cell, he had to be tested for COVID-19 at Imphal city. Bimol Meitei was not brought back to Lilong PS till 4:00 pm.
