The Press Council of India, self-regulatory watchdog of the press, was first set up in 1966 by the Parliament on the recommendations of the First Press Commission with the object of preserving the freedom of the press and of maintaining and improving the standards of press in India.

Khaidem Athouba Meitei, a journalist of Huiyen Lanpao, a local daily, has been nominated as a member of Press Council of India (PCI).
Athouba was amongst the new 22 members notified by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting on October 6, for the membership of the next three years. Six editors are part of the new council members, including Athouba.
Son of Khaidem (O) Ningol Purnimashi and Khaidem Itobi, Athouba (38) is a resident of Chana Maning Leikai, Imphal East. After graduating from Nagpur University, he completed his Master’s and PhD in Mass Communication from Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University, Wardha, Maharashtra. He also completed a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) from the same university.
After working in Dainik Bhaskar (Maharashtra), Nagpur edition, for five years, he is presently working as a resident editor of Huiyen Lanpao.
The other members of PCI included — Ankur Dua, (editor, Muzaffar Nagar Bulletin), Baldev Raj Gupta, (group editor, Express News), Khaidem Athouba Meitei (resident editor, Hueiyen Lanpao), Prakash Dubey (group editor, Dainik Bhaskar), Suman Gupta, (editor, Jan Morcha), Vinod K. Jose (executive editor, The Caravan), Ansu Chakraborty (working journalist, Aaj Kaal), Jai Shankar Gupta (correspondent, Deshbandhu), Kingshuk Pramanik (working journalist, Sangbad Pratidin), Prajnananda Chaudhuri (working journalist, Ananda Bazar Patrika), Vinod Kohli (working journalist, Utkal Mail), Gurbir Singh (working journalist, The New Indian Express), and Prasanna Kumar Mohanty (working journalist, Indus Valley Times).
From business of management of newspaper Gurinder Singh (Indian Observer) LC Bhartiya, Akashdeep, Aarti Tripathi, Jai Pradesh, and Shyam Singh Panwar, were selected.
While G Sudhakar Nair (executive editor, Press Trust of India) was selected from news agencies, Prof. JS Rajput, Shailendra Dubbey, and Madhav Kaushik were nominated by the UGC, Bar Council of India and Sahitya Academy. K. Keshava Rao was nominated by the Rajya Sabha.
