The Manipur government on Saturday decided to discontinue the COVID curfew which has been imposed in the state for the last 21 days to control the transmission of the novel coronavirus.

The state cabinet carefully reviewed the curfew and in order to maintain balance with livelihood and economic activities, it was decided to discontinue the curfew and adopt micro containment zone approach, in line with union government advisories, official sources said.

It was also decided that gram panchayats, village authorities, local clubs, etc. will be fully involved by deputy commissioners in ensuring strict micro containment zones and isolation of fresh positive cases.

The state cabinet also expressed gratitude to the union government for promptly deputing a multi-disciplinary expert team on COVID-19 to Manipur, in response to requests made.

The state government also requested the public to adopt COVID-appropriate behaviour.

With no respite in positivity and deaths, many have been maintaining that the COVID curfew, which began on July 18, was having an adverse effect on the people — economically and psychologically. Experts have also suggested that the authorities should adopt more practical approaches.
