MHA directs NIA to investigate Athuan Abonmai case

The DGP, Manipur, State Home Department on September 25 and 28 sent all the relevant documents to Ministry of Home Affairs with a request to issue necessary orders for causing investigation into the case of abduction and murder of Athuan Abonmai, by the NIA.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has directed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to investigate the abduction and brutal murder of former president and advisor of Zeliangrong Baudi (ANM), Athuan Abonmai. 

In a release by special secretary (Home), Government of Manipur, H Gyan Prakash on Friday said that the Ministry of Home Affairs (CTCR Division), Government of India, Ministry of Home Affairs vide order No.11011/63/2021/NIA dated 30-09-2021 has issued orders directing the NIA to take up investigation of the case. 

The DGP, Manipur, State Home Department vide letter No. 9/6(23)/2009 H(Pt-I) dated September 25 and 28 sent all the relevant documents to Ministry of Home Affairs with a request to issue necessary orders for causing investigation into FIR case No. 4(9)2021 TML PS, regarding the abduction and murder of Athuan Abonmai, by the NIA. 

Athuan Abonmai was abducted on September 22, from Pologround, Tamenglong Headquarter, by some suspected cadres of NSCN (I-M) right under the nose of the large security forces deployed for the ‘Go to Hills 2.0’ programme, which was attended by chief minister N Biren and other cabinet ministers. Athuan was later found bludgeoned to death, some 30 km from the Headquarter. 

The JAC formed against the murder and others have been demanding the state government to let NIA investigate the case, amongst other demands. The new development came after CM Biren, minister Biswajit and BJP state unit president A Sharda Devi rushed to Delhi on Thursday.
