Kangpokpi: Two more succumb to COVID-19, ‘total lockdown’ extended till May 31

According to the town committee, government services, banking services, essential services and other emergency services, funeral, etc. are exempted from the purview of the total lockdown but they should function following strict COVID advisories.

A stenographer at Sadar Hills Autonomous District Council, Kangpokpi and a pastor at P Khohthah in Kangpokpi District succumbed to the dreaded COVID-19 pushing the fatality of the pandemic to 24 in the district.

Lalthanglen Chongloi (41), son of (L) Sonmang Chongloi of Kangpokpi Ward No. 2, a stenographer at Sadar Hills Autonomous District Council Kangpokpi succumbed to the dreaded COVID-19 early morning at around 3:20 am on Thursday. 

Unfortunately, the deceased entire family including his wife, children and one neighbour were also tested positive. Amongst his family members who were tested positive, his wife and his two and half years old child including the neighbour were admitted at COVID Care Centre Leikop while the other five members were put under home isolation.

The deceased was buried at Kangpokpi cemetery by volunteers of Kangpokpi Youth Union following strict protocols.

It was indeed a hard moment to witness the deceased’s children and wife standing at their residence gate and just watching their deceased father and husband evacuated inside the ambulance for burial. The only thing they could do was waving their hand and saying goodbye to their beloved father and husband.

Kangpokpi Ward No. 2 authority sealed the main road connecting the town with the ward following another death owing to the dreaded COVID-19. There are two fatalities reported in Kangpokpi Ward No. 2 during the second wave so far while another COVID death was reported in Kangpokpi Ward No. 4 earlier. Kangpokpi town alone has had three COVID fatalities during the second wave till now.

The other victim, a pastor of P Khohthah village in Kangpokpi District, Lensat Kipgen (58) succumbed to the dreaded COVID-19 at RIMS Imphal at around 2:20 am Thursday morning.

He was admitted to the hospital on May 19 under the department of medicine. However, despite intensive care, the patient died this morning due to COVID-19, typhoid fever, acute respiratory distress syndrome.

With ten more positives detected in the past 24 hours and fourteen cured and discharged on Thursday, the total active case of the district stands at 94.

Meanwhile, Kangpokpi CSO COVID Task Force has extended the total lockdown in the district till May 31 due to rapid increase in positive case and fatality.

The public notification issued by Kangpokpi CSO COVID Task Force secretary Thangtinlen Haokip stated that all the village chiefs, village authority, town committee, youth clubs are authorised to make their own local arrangements for basic and essential necessities for public convenience.

The district CSO COVID Task Force also appealed to the public to bear with the local adjustment of the total lockdown in the district as it is for the safety of the public while exhorting the people to stay home and stay safe.

Following the district CSO COVID Task Force extension of total lockdown in the district, the local bodies of Kangpokpi under the aegis of Kangpokpi Town Committee, which was the first to impose total lockdown in the district at Kangpokpi town since May 7, has also extended the total lockdown till May 31 at the district headquarters.

Kangpokpi Town Committee chairman L Kipgen in a public notice issued on Thursday stated that Kangpokpi town is experiencing a continuous surge of infection and fatality of COVID-19 and in consonance with the district CSO COVID Task Force notification, the total lockdown in the town has been extended till May 31.

The town committee chairman also instructed the president and secretary of Kangpokpi Auto Owner’s Association to immediately stop plying passengers in auto-rickshaw within and outside of the town in public interest.
