In an exclusive report, TFM had revealed several suspicious irregularities and abnormalities in the selected list for Ishan Uday Scholarship for the session 2020-2021.
A group of students, who had applied for Ishan Uday scholarship, 2020-21, on Saturday submitted a representation to the education minister of Manipur urging his intervention in the alleged scam of the scholarship.
Speaking to TFM after meeting the education minister S Rajen, the students said that the minister assured them to look into the matter, while stating that since the scholarship is being awarded by University Grants Commission the state cannot directly intervene. Even the nodal officer is under the UGC, he added.
But, as the students have alleged that there are irregularities and anomalies in the beneficiary lists for the session 2020-21, the issue cannot be taken lightly, the minister told the students. He also called up the director of the Directorate of University and Higher Education, Manipur, over the phone to look into the matter, the students told TFM.
In the representation, the students are alleging that in the beneficiary lists, the same name of several students appeared; some with suspicious caste category; some students are claiming to be studying certain courses which are not offered by the colleges. The students also contended that it was demoralizing for the students and urged the minister to investigate the matter.
The students further expressed their desire to resolve the matter before the scholarship is deposited to the bank accounts of the beneficiaries. They urged the student bodies to pressure the concerned on the matter.
Ishan Uday is a special scholarship scheme for the Northeast region introduced by the University Grants Commission (UGC) from academic session 2014-15 for encouraging higher education among students of economically weaker sections. Around 10,000 students are selected for each academic session.
