Indefinite blockade on NH-2: NESO writes to Amit Shah, seeks proactive steps to control situation

NESO also appealed to the SAPO to reconsider and lift the ongoing shut down at the earliest for the interest of the innocent general public. It also urged AAMYA to suspend the counter shut down for the interest of the general public.

North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) on Tuesday drew the attention of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to the prevailing Situation in Manipur and adjoining areas due to the indefinite total shutdown by Southern Angami Peoples’ Organisation (SAPO) in Nagaland.

It expressed serious concern with the suffering of the common people due to the prevailing situation. The NESO urged the Government of India to take proactive steps to control the situation from further deterioration and also should intervene by taking the initiative to solve the issue and to bring all the parties involved to the negotiating table so that the issue can be resolved amicably.

NESO, comprising of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF), All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Garo Students’ Union (GSU) and All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) representing eight major students’ movements of the seven states of the North East Region, sent a representation to the union home minister.

The student organisation stated that due to the imposition of indefinite total shutdown on the National Highway No. 2 (earlier 39), which is the lifeline of Manipur and the adjoining areas since 23rd March, 2022 by SAPO of Nagaland, the situation in the adjoining areas and of Manipur is deteriorating. This indefinite shutdown has greatly affected the lives and the livelihood of the innocent people, it added.

The student organisation maintained that people to people’s dialogue is to be encouraged so that the people on the ground do not suffer while at the same time the authorities concerned should take proactive initiative to find out ways and means to solve the problem.

The copy of the representation was also sent to Manipur CM N. Biren Singh and his Nagaland counterpart Neiphiu Rio.

In a press communique, NESO expressed its anguish and serious concern over the situation arising at the border along the Nagaland-Manipur boundary, the indefinite shutdown by SAPO.

SAPO called the shut down along the National Highway No.2 (Dimapur – Imphal road) which is the lifeline of Manipur and the adjoining areas since 23 March, 2022 on the demand that Manipur Government should withdraw its armed personnel from Kezoltsa Area

Saying that this indefinite shutdown has greatly affected the lives and the livelihood of the innocent people. NESO appealed to the SAPO to reconsider and lift the ongoing shut down at the earliest for the interest of the innocent general public and at the same time NESO also urged upon the All Assam Manipuri Youth Association (AAMYA) to suspend the counter shut down for the interest of the general public.
