The Economic and Resource Development Organization (ERDO) on Saturday urged the political parties and candidates vying for power in the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly election to explicitly declare plans to improve the economy of the state in their respective manifestos.

Even after 50 years of attaining statehood, Manipur’s economy seems to be better off while it was ruled by kings, said ERDO secretary general Shanta Nahakpam during a press conference at Chingmeirong, Imphal.

Stating that the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of the state is far behind in comparison to other states, he said that the state is surviving on supplementary grants and financial support.

Shanta also urged the political parties and candidates to declare plans to take benefit of the infrastructural developments implemented by successive governments, in order for the state to be able to compete on a global level economically.

As the earnings of the cottage industries in rural areas are low and the dependence on government jobs led to the minimal household earnings, the budget of the state remains deficit, he added.

ERDO president Takhellambam Sanajaoba, vice president Naorem Mohen also attended the press conference.
