Manipur State Council, Communist Party of India (MSC/CPI) on Friday urged three Members of Parliament (MPs) from Manipur to push demand for “Special Status” to the state in the parliament. Only under the Special Status tag, the leaders of the state can work towards making Manipur a “developed” state.

The CPI, in a release, said that the union government that ruled the country till now cannot acknowledge more than 2000 years old history of Manipur. Due to this, the Special Status to the state was taken away and had been treated like other states. It is not just about funds, but there are other things that come with that status, the CPI opined.

It is the duty of the MPs and the chief minister to apprise the Union government of the real meaning of Special Status of Manipur, it said.

The release further said that the Look East policy and Act East policy failed to deliver tangible development to the people of the state. Due to the opening of international gateways in Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, the significance of Moreh has become non-relevant, it added.

Although Manipur has vast natural resources, the people have not been the real owner of it, the CPI said and alleged that it remained the hunting ground of the government’s “thieves”. Only lip-service and advertisement won’t be able to save the environment, the CPI asserted.

“How can Manipur develop without taking up any initiative to become self-sufficient,” the CPI questioned.
