The Congress and the Left parties on Thursday condemned the killing of advisor of Zeliangrong Baudi Athuan Abonmai and demanded a high-level enquiry into the incident.
Addressing the media persons at Congress Bhavan in Imphal, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) working presidents K Meghachandra (MLA) and I Hemochandra (ex-MLA) described Athuan Abonmai as the voice of the unity and integrity of Manipur. “His assassination must be taken with utmost seriousness as the martyrdom of Athuan Abonmai can’t go into insignificant history,” they said.
Saluting the fearless voice of Athuan Abonmai, the Congress said his loss is the historic loss for the entire Manipur. The party demanded that the DM and the SP of the district concerned must be sacked within 24 hours. “Both should be held responsible for the loss of Abonmai’s life,” it said.
Demanding institution of Judicial Inquiry on this serious matter by not less than a sitting High Court Judge within 24 hours, the Congress said that DGP of Manipur must explain what has led to the failure of non-responsiveness to the FIR lodged by Abonmai’s son at Lamphel Police Station, why and how the police and district administration could not prevent the abduction of Abonmai in a broad day light from a government event in full public glare.
“The party considers that the broad day light assassination of Abonmai is a ground reflection of the total failure of Home Department, CID, Crime Branch and State Intelligence Bureau in the state,” said the Congress.
The party further said the incident of such brutality and inhumanity has never ever taken place in history to silence a democratic and fearless voice which always stood for the uncompromising unity and integrity of Manipur. Bullets can’t silence the true sons and daughters of Manipur. Many Abonmais will be born to follow the philosophy and ideology of martyred Athuan Abonmai, it added.
Lamenting that the entire state government of Manipur has completely failed to protect the precious life of our true son of Manipur Athuan Abonmai, the Congress said the party stands for justice to Athuan Abonmai. “The party will fight unitedly to protect the unity and integrity of Manipur, as was cherished and dreamt by Abonmai,” it added.
Meanwhile, the leadership of Left parties in Manipur viz. CPI, CPI(M), RSP and AIFB met at Irawat Bhawan, BT Road, Imphal on Thursday. The meeting strongly condemned the kidnapping and killing of tribal leader Athuan Abonmai. The meeting also condoled the sudden demise of the leader.
The Left parties said Athuan Abonmai works for the betterment and upliftment of the people particularly of the tribal population. He is a Champion to bring harmony and peaceful coexistence amongst the Manipuris irrespective of caste, creed, community and ethnicity, they added.
Stating that Athuan Abonmai was waiting to welcome the Chief Minister and his entourage at Polloground, Tamenglong for a programme ” Go to Hills 2.0″, the Left parties demanded a high-level enquiry into the kidnapping of Athuan Abonmai from the high security zone and killing afterwards because there was security lapses.
