Brown Sugar worth Rs 4.3 crore seized in Moreh, 4 arrested

A team of the 5th Assam Rifles on Saturday seized 2.15 kg of brown sugar worth around Rs 4.30 crore at T. Motha Village, erstwhile Minou village, in Moreh situated along India-Myanmar Border. Four persons were arrested.

The arrested were identified as Lamngailal Kipgen (32) yrs S/o (L) Lunkhopao Kipgen of New Laikot, Tengnoupal District, Letkhochon Kipgen (22yrs) S/O Jangkholen Kipgen of Zalenphai Village Pt-II, Moreh Tengnoupal District, Ngamgoulen Touthang (32yrs) S/O Thangmang Touthang of Janglenphai Village, CCP District, and Seingam Haokip (38yrs) S/O (L) Zamkhai Haokip of Ngamkhai Veng Moreh, Tengnoupal District

According to the 5th Assam Rifles’ report to the police, the seizure and arrests were made during a routine check of vehicles at MVCP of COY, 5th Assam Rifles. A green Maruti Gypsy and one scooty TVS N-TORQ, purple-black in colour, both without registration numbers were intercepted at T. Motha village at around 1.30 am.

On thorough checking of the vehicles, 50 soap cases containing suspected brown sugar were found concealed inside one spare tyre of the Maruti gypsy. The spare tyre was found under the right side of the passenger seat (back side).

On preliminary questioning, the driver of the Maruti gypsy Lamngailal Kipgen admitted that the mentioned contraband item belonged to him. The brown sugar was being ferried from Haolenphai Village, Moreh to Lilong in Thoubal District Manipur.

Ngamgoulen Touthang and Seingam Haokip were occupants in the Maruti Gypsy while Letkhochon Kipgen was following the Gypsy in the scooty.

Seized drugs, vehicles and arrested persons, along with their belongings were handed over to Moreh Police Station.

Meanwhile, Moreh Police station registered an FIR and initiated the further inquiry.
