Condemning the barbaric act of physical assault on a doctor couple by Manipur police personnel, various Tangkhul civil society organisations demanded dismissal of security personnel involved in the heinous act and extended full support to the demand of the Indian Medical Association, Manipur State Branch.
Tangkhul Naga Long, Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) and All Tangkhul Medico’s Association (ATMA) issued different press statements condemning the attack on Dr K Soreingam, Assistant Professor of JNIMS and his wife Dr K Lumthing RV on September 2 night when they were returning home after duty.
In a press release, the Tangkhul Naga Long, apex body of the Tangkhul community, has condemned in the strongest term on the barbaric act of physical assault with loaded service rifle butt on the head of Dr K Soreingam, Assistant Professor of JNIMS in front of his wife Dr K Lumthing RV, who were returning home after performing duties from hospital by State police personnel in uniform.
The release stated “committing such heinous crime by the protector of the people brings not only bad image and shame to Manipur State Police but a deep sense of insecurity to the general public of Manipur, particularly in a time when the State is gripped with the pandemic of Covid19. It is very clear that the police who were responsible for perpetrating such a heinous crime are quite unaware of the services being rendered by medical doctors in fighting the Covid-19.
“The TNL urges the authorities concerned for immediate action on the culprits to the extent of terminating their services. We stood in support of the demand of the Indian Medical Association, Manipur State Branch for termination within three days,” said the release signed by the Vice President of TNL.
The Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) in a press release stated that “the TKS is very saddened and furious at the same time upon the barbaric act and atrocities of the Manipur Police specifically on duty of the Chief Minister of Manipur. While the rest of the world is promoting peace, it is very unfortunate that the Manipur Police still exercise high handedness to their own people.
“The TKS strongly condemns the act of injustice particularly upon Dr K Soreingam and his wife Dr K Lumthing RV, who are working at JNIMS, Porompat at around 8.15pm on September 2, 2021. The Saklong, therefore, urges the competent authority to immediately deliver justice to the victims.”
The Indian Medical Association, Manipur State Branch on September 3, 2021 has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Manipur demanding the security personnel involved in the heinous act for termination of their service within three days failing which the Association will launch a series of State wide protests.
All Tangkhul Medico’s Association (ATMA) in a press release has also strongly condemned the assault on Dr K Soreingam and his wife Dr K Lumthing RV on the night of September 2, 2021 at Luwangsangbam, Imphal East.
The association has called for immediate and strong disciplinary action on the accused so as instill confidence in people and bring repute to the Government and the police force.
