The Communist Party of India condemned arrest of people for putting up posters criticising the Union government by the Delhi Police.
The National Secretariat of CPI, in a statement on Monday, said that the action of the Delhi Police is “highly objectionable and anti-democratic”. It is the democratic right of people to criticise government’s actions or inactions and this cannot be taken away, it asserted.
“Unfortunately, authorities are misusing power and COVID situations to impose their anti-democratic diktat,” CPI said and condemned this “anti-democratic action” and demanded that arrested people be released immediately.
COVID mismanagement in India has become an issue of international criticism and in India people are asking questions and have every right to do so, the CPI argued.
Stating that the government which was busy patting its own back after the first wave of COVID is now exposed after the collapse of the health system, the Left party accused the government of trying to muzzle the criticism.
Instead of suppressing facts, the government must try to improve health infrastructure and COVID management, CPI demanded.
Informing that Opposition parties have written to the Prime Minister and demanded action in this regard, the statement said that CPI sincerely hopes that the government will give serious consideration to these suggestions and stop repression of the people.
