The NGO Forum on ADB and its allies have expressed deep concern and unwavering solidarity with the people of Manipur as they face escalating violence, repression, and widespread human rights violations.
The NGO Forum on ADB comprises over 250 civil society organizations from across Asia and the Pacific. These groups monitor and advocate for accountability, transparency, and sustainability in the projects and policies of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). This network plays a crucial role in ensuring that the voices of affected communities are heard and that development initiatives respect environmental and social justice
A statement issued by the Forum said that Manipur has been gripped by a crisis marked by mob violence, arson, and the destruction of homes, schools, and places of worship. Over 225 lives have been lost, more than 60,000 people displaced, and countless others silenced through fear, censorship, and repressive measures.
A Humanitarian and Human Rights Crisis
The violence has disproportionately affected women, children, and other vulnerable groups, highlighting systemic failures in governance and justice. The destruction of critical community infrastructure has exacerbated displacement and hindered recovery efforts. In response, the Indian government has imposed curfews and internet shutdowns, stifling dissent and limiting access to essential information.
Calls for Justice and Accountability
The NGO Forum on ADB has condemned these acts and demanded urgent measures to address the crisis, including:
- Restoration of Internet Services and Lifting of Curfews: To ensure free communication, mobilize humanitarian aid, and allow the dissemination of information.
- Independent Investigations: An impartial probe into reported atrocities to guarantee justice and accountability for victims.
- Inclusive Peace-Building: A transparent process involving all affected communities to address systemic injustices and foster trust.
- Immediate Humanitarian Assistance: Emergency support prioritizing the safety and dignity of displaced and affected communities.
Appeal to the Indian Government and Global Leaders
The Forum called on the Indian government to address the root causes of the conflict and hold perpetrators accountable. They also urged the international community to intervene and uphold the principles of justice, human rights, and accountability.
“The people of Manipur deserve peace, security, and the protection of their rights,” the statement declared, emphasizing the need for decisive action to end the violence and pave the way for reconciliation.
