Four persons, including two women, were injured at an explosion at Gandhi Chowk in Ukhrul’s Phungreitang at around 5 pm on Wednesday.

According to the police, the injured women were identified as Manaowon, 49, of Chingai village and Dr Wonyao Kasar ,35, of Phungyar, and others were Angayung Rizat, 39 of Lamlang Village and P Leishingam (37 years) of Roni Village.

SI W Marchang said that the explosion happened at Gandhi Statue erected at Phungreitang, Ukhrul. Just a few feet away from the statue, police collected pellets from the explosion site. The police suspect that it could be an improvised hand grenade.

Sources from Bethany Clinic told TFM that “Manaowon of Chingai was hit by two pellets on the right hand and one on the right side of the abdomen. She has been referred to Leishiphung Christian Hospital, Ukhrul for X-ray and further treatment.” Later, she was referred to JNIMS Imphal for further treatment. According to sources, two pellets have entered her stomach, which needs an immediate operation.

Speaking to TFM, Wonyao Kasar said that she was pulling the shutter of her “Ura Clinic” as it was time for her to go home. “Suddenly, there was a loud explosion and two hard objects hit my right face. After getting two stitches from Bethany Clinic, Phungreitang, I have gone home,” she added.

Angayung Rizat received an injury on his forehead. P Leishingam has taken X-ray at Leishiphung Christian Hospital. A pellet seemed to have entered P Leishingam’s body below his right arm. P. Leishingam is a teacher at Little Angels English School, Ukhrul.

They were all returning home after the day’s duties and chores.

Meanwhile, Vice President of Tangkhul Naga Long Jollyson R Shimray condemned the bomb explosion and appealed to the perpetrators to refrain from such inhumane activities. “Creating fear psychosis in the heart and peaceful Town of Ukhrul should be condemned by everyone,” he added.

The All Hunphun Tang Association (AHTA) also condemned “the insidious and cowardly action of those responsible for the bombing at Gandhi Chowk, Phungreitang, Hunphun/Ukhrul”. “There is no justification for any anti-social elements in any given society,” it added.

A statement issued by AHTA president Chonmi Raleng said, “The association condemns in very strong terms this shameful and undignified act and injuring three. This kind of blatant, irresponsible and senseless act will not be acceptable within the jurisdiction of Hunphun/Ukhrul village authority or in any given society and humanity in general.”
